How to save at outdoor & fitness stores
Outdoor gear follows the seasons. Tents, sleeping bags and hiking boots are cheapest at the end of summer, when stores clear space for winter stock, and again during the big spring sales. Jackets and fleece hit their lowest prices in January and during Black Friday week.
Most outdoor stores run member programs rather than sitewide codes. REI's co-op dividend, The North Face's XPLR Pass and Columbia's Greater Rewards all beat a one-time 10% code if you buy more than once a year. Codes that do exist usually cover one full-price item and exclude sale items, so compare the code price with the sale section before checking out. Running shoes are the exception: last season's colors often drop by a third as soon as the new version launches, so check the sale section of the brand's own store before paying full price elsewhere.
